Early Childhood Teacher Education & Training

There are several ways to train to be a Waldorf early childhood educator.

If you do not yet have experience in Waldorf education, you should consider a full-time two-year training program. These programs can be taken either towards a Certificate or a Master’s Degree, depending on your own educational background and intentions.

If you are already working in a Waldorf setting, a part-time training might be more suitable. These can also be taken toward a Certificate or a Master’s Degree.

There are also introductory and advanced professional development workshops and courses, as well as training programs for home care and child care providers. A brief listing follows. Please contact the training center directly for information on programs, admissions, tuition and fees.

Full-time Programs

Full-time two-year programs in Waldorf Early Childhood Education are offered by  Sunbridge College in Spring Valley, NY, and at Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, CA. Each offers a two-year full-time on-campus program - a Foundation or Orientation Program followed by an Early Childhood Education Program. Both colleges offer certificate programs; Sunbridge College also offers a Master’s Degree option.

These colleges also offer a wide array of workshops, conferences, and introductory and advanced summer courses for early childhood educators, as well as training programs in remedial education, school organization and administration, gardening and bio-dynamics, and the arts.

Part-time Programs

Rudolf Steiner College in California, Sunbridge College in New York, and the West Coast Institute for Anthroposophy in British Columbia, Canada, offer part-time two-year (three summers and two intervening school years) practitioner-based certificate programs for those already working in a Waldorf setting with young children. A third summer term is not part of this program. Students obtain a "Letter of Completion" and are encouraged to obtain certification through the provincial ministry

These part-time trainings include three-week summer courses, plus five-day intensive courses each fall and spring, with faculty mentors who support participants in their work. These are Certificate programs; the Sunbridge training may also be taken for a Master’s Degree in Waldorf Early Childhood Education.
